The Dakota poet and activist has been awarded a $25,000 Minnesota State Arts Board grant.

Marine on St. Croix poet Rosetta “Rosie” Peters is among 116 artists to receive support from the 2026 Arts Experiences pilot program, which awarded over $5 million to individual artists and arts organizations across Minnesota.

Peters plans to partner with composer and longtime collaborator JG Everest to design poetry workshops and immersive sound installations over the course of a residency at the Lower Sioux Indian Community near Morton, Minnesota. “My goal is to serve and cultivate community by helping human beings see the eye of their hearts through poetry,” Peters says. The artistic collaboration will culminate in a series of events and student presentations meant to bridge the Lower Sioux and Marine on St. Croix communities.

Last May, Peters experienced a life-changing cardiac event that led to what she describes as a personal rebirth, prompting shifts in both her lifestyle and creative outlook. Today, that renewed focus extends into her role as co-founder of the Arrow Broken Poetry Collective, which provides education, outreach and writing workshops. The collective hosts monthly poetry readings and open mic events throughout the St. Croix Valley.

Everest, a composer and musician, is known for his interactive sound gardens. As an artist-in-residence at Wild River State Park, he created many immersive listening experiences.

Together, Peters and Everest continue to explore the intersection of poetry and sound—using art as a way to gather in community, share stories and create space for reflection.
