Young entrepreneur Ethan Sorensen opens his Main Street shop.
Sit-down restaurants account for the bulk of Stillwater’s dining scene, but Ethan Sorensen saw room for something different—quality food without the wait. “I’ve always loved seeing all kinds of people come through for a bite,” Sorensen says. “Construction crews, office workers, tourists, locals. Sandwiches are one of those foods everybody connects over, and I wanted to create a place that serves fresh food fast, whether it’s lunch, dinner or something to bring on the boat or to a picnic.”

Sorensen applied his six years of experience in restaurants and hospitality—including his position as marketing manager at Lake Elmo Inn—to open E’s Gourmet Sandwiches on May 6. The menu at E’s Gourmet Sandwiches focuses on fresh ingredients, herb-based sauces and handcrafted meats, like the shop’s 12-hour pastrami. It offers classic sandwiches like the Reuben, as well as burgers, soups, wraps and more. Plans are also underway to launch an ordering kiosk at nearby No Neck Tony’s later this summer, and catering options will be available soon.

The 20-year-old restaurateur credits several people with helping to shape his journey. He points to his aunt, Jamie Malone, a chef who introduced him to the industry and whom he worked alongside while helping renovate Grand Café in South Minneapolis during her ownership. He also credits Pat Weber of Mise en Place Consulting, whose 40-plus years of culinary experience helped guide the sandwich shop’s menu and opening process.
