SUMMARY:Layers of St. Croix History: Writing the River
DESCRIPTION:We are fortunate to partner with the Greg Seitz of St. Croix 360 for an incredible summer paddle series. \n“Layers of St. Croix History” trips will offer a relaxing paddle down the river as Greg shares stories about unique aspects of the river’s past. \nThese seven-mile trips will take you past geologic features\, natural wonders\, and important places for human history. While each trip will highlight a specific historic theme\, we will also look for birds\, fish\, mussels\, flowers and other wildlife that are part of the river’s past\, present and future. \nPaddle 1: Writing the River \nDate: 3–8 p.m. June 13\nLocation: Wisconsin Interstate Park to Osceola Landing \nThere have been generations of writers who have spent a lot of ink describing the St. Croix. Helen McCann White\, Charles Roos\, James Taylor Dunn and many more have documented the river’s history\, nature and the sheer joy of spending time on it. There are also many contemporary authors\, poets\, advocates\, historians and journalists who write about the river. Learn about these writers and hear some favorite excerpts. Discuss some of the unique ways they used language to describe and evoke the St. Croix’s special qualities and stories. (Take home a booklet with samples of rare writings about the river.)

SUMMARY:Bootleggers and Big Bands: A Speakeasy Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:Step back into the shadows and sparkle of the 1930s for an unforgettable Speakeasy Fundraiser—an evening of history\, intrigue and swing. The night begins with legendary true-crime historian Paul Maccabee\, author of John Dillinger Slept Here\, who will share riveting stories from the mob era in St. Paul—and surprising connections to Scandia. From secret hideouts to larger-than-life characters\, Maccabee brings Minnesota’s Prohibition past vividly to life. \nAfter the stories\, the floor opens up for a spirited swing dance with Riverside Unplugged. Experienced swing dancers will be on hand to teach classic moves and get everyone dancing. \nGuests are encouraged to dress in their finest 1930s attire—think pinstripes\, fringe\, fedoras\, and flapper flair—for a night inspired by the glamour of the Great Gatsby era. \nAppetizers and dessert will be served\, and a cash bar will feature Prohibition-era cocktails alongside wine and beer. Slip into the speakeasy\, raise a glass\, and dance the night away—all in support of a great cause — Raising of the Water Tower Barn.

SUMMARY:ArtReach St. Croix Presents "Deep Mapping"
DESCRIPTION:ArtReach St. Croix’s new exhibition centered around Deep Mapping. \nDeep Mapping: Explore the places and stories of the St. Croix River basin with multiple maps by St. Croix 360 founder and writer Greg Seitz. This exhibition and the work for his upcoming book (UMN Press\, 2028) will look past the usual tropes of lumberjacks and settlers to the diverse peoples\, ecosystems and communities that have created the watershed as we know it today. A Dakota language map by Marlena Myles showing Minneapolis (Village of Many Lakes) & St. Paul (Village along the White Cliffs) will also be featured. \nThis exhibit is in conjunction with Valley Pottery: 2\,000 years \nValley Pottery: 2\,000 Years The St. Croix valley is famous for its vibrant community of ceramic artists\, but did you know that pottery traditions in the St Croix valley go back over 2\,000 years?  Ed Fleming\, archaeologist with the Science Museum of Minnesota\, has been studying these ancient traditions and how pottery styles demonstrate trade and movement along the rivers of the Midwest.  “The St. Croix is this great north-south corridor that crosses biomes\,” Fleming says. “It connects the north woods to the prairies.” Potters working here today created pieces inspired by the forms\, decorations and stories they learned about during a recent visit to the Science Museum in St. Paul.
